Teacher kit · session 3
The license path in eight weeks
45 minutes · Grades 9 to 12 who want to test
Bring: HamStudy accounts (free); the club's VE session dates; the ARRL youth fee-waiver form.
Goal
Every student who wants a license has a plan: a study app, a session date, and the paperwork that waives the fee.
The exam (10 minutes)
Thirty-five questions from a public pool, twenty-six to pass, given by three volunteer examiners from a club. The 2026 to 2030 Technician pool is the current one. The club's VE team sets the date; the school books the room.
Study (25 minutes)
HamStudy's flashcards adapt to what a student gets wrong and can share progress with an instructor, which is how the volunteer sees who is ready. Twenty minutes a day for six weeks is the usual pace. Use the session to set everyone up and do the first twenty questions together, out loud.
- Under-18 applicants: the ARRL Youth Licensing Grant Program covers the FCC application fee; bring the form.
- Everyone needs an FCC Registration Number before the session; the school can help with the FRN registration in class.
Close (10 minutes)
Names go on the VE session sheet. Students who do not want to test still finish the programme: the practical sessions only need the volunteer's license.
